This week we are bringing you a very special episode focusing on men’s mental health and lifestyle psychiatry. We are joined by two very knowledgeable guests, working in this field: Dr Joe Firth is a Presidential Research Follow at the University of Manchester, where he completed his pHD focusing on the benefits of physical exercise as a treatment adjunct for young people with psychosis. He is passionate about developing pragmatic and impactful programmes designed to help young people with mental health problems to adopt healthy lifestyles and benefit from the positive effects of exercise on our mental and physical health. Dr Gregory Scott Brown is a psychiatrist and wellness advocate based over the other side of the pond in Texas! He is a leading voice in supporting evidence based holistic mental health treatments and prevention. He is also the founder and director of the Centre for Green Psychiatry as well as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Texas Dell medical school. Dr. Brown supports an integrated approach to health using a combination of conventional pharmacotherapy with non-pharmaceutical therapies such as meditation and physical exercise. In this episode we discuss the topic of men’s mental health and why there is often silence around this subject. We also delve deeper into the evidence base for lifestyle interventions, such as diet and exercise for mental health as well as how these interventions might be delivered in a psychiatric setting. In particular, we discuss the difficulty in balancing the metabolic side effects of some medications commonly used in the mental health setting and controlling psychiatric symptoms. Tune in to hear some fascinating case studies and research findings, as well as how you can implement some of the concepts such as green psychiatry and movement into your own life, for better physical and mental wellbeing.
